Arrived Drake's Bay approximately 5am this morning. In the dawning light we found ourselves surrounded by small fishing boats waiting to head out for the day's catch. By daylight we were the only ones in the bay.
We slept deeply for a few hours, then were up in the warm, dry sunshine, cleaning the boat, reorganizing stuff, taking well-deserved showers, airing out clothes and bedding. Later in the day enjoying a proper supper and a lovely glass of wine (or two). We are feeling somewhat human again!
Drake's Bay is a supernatural place. Very remote, craggy, gorgeous light infused - we are surrounded by wind shattered bluffs and cropped hills with grazing cattle. Tomorrow we intend to explore the area more and will probably be here for a couple of days before heading into the city. The weather is predicted to remain stable.
All is well aboard Ka'sala.

Approaching Drake's Bay
Lat: 38:20:659 N
Long: 123:32:344 W
9:30 pm Pacific Time
In a few hours we expect to drop the anchor in Drake's Bay off Point Reyes. We stayed in this marine sanctuary anchorage the last time we made this trip - though that time it was in the fog. The bay is at the entrance to the San Francisco area, a few nautical miles from the famous bridge. So, basically, we are almost in San Francisco - in a little more than 5 days - a fast passage. We are looking forward to a good night's uninterrupted sleep, shower, boat clean, etc., before entering the bustling city. (Got to look good!). The weather is great - sunny and warm - so also want to explore the bay by kayak and hiking trails. It will be a good way to transition back to the "real" world.
Last night was very windy - most either of us have ever seen. We both saw 50 knots in gusts, but steady 40 - 45 knots, very steep, high seas. I never knew Ka'sala was such a great surfer! More details in an upcoming blog entry in a few days. For now, crew is in fine spirits and Ka'sala was amazing.

just south of Cape Mendicino
Lat: 40:17:180 N
Long: 125:14.298 W
7:30 PM Pacific Time
We went 145 nautical miles in the last 24 hours! Wow! Great winds - gusts to 38 knots!!! and some pretty impressive seas - all under sunny skies. Enjoyed watching dozens of porpoise (?) dolphin (?) playing around the boat - diving in and around the bow - such a lovely sight. Looks like we may be making SF earlier than planned if the winds continue!

Great sail until midnight last night when we were reduced to motoring in no wind and confused seas. Wind came back this afternoon and we are now cruising along with 25 knots of wind - lovely! Expect to round the dreaded Cape Mendicino sometime tomorrow evening. Gorgeous sunny weather to continue.

Off the Oregon coast
Lat: 44:34:6588 N
Long: 125:00:1210W
7pm Pacific time
Today was a glorious day at sea - warm, sunny, the seas relatively flat and a lovely 10 - 15 knot breeze pushing us along to our destination. Last night we had to motor as the winds died down completely. Beautiful clear night - lots of stars followed by a very bright moon. We aren't making the distance we had hoped, but we are well and Ka'sala is riding beautifully.

Left Neah Bay yesterday at 10:30 Pacific Time. As I write it is almost 6pm Pacific time. Yesterday's passage was rocky, but crew and Ka'sala are in great shape! Gorgeous sailing day today - sunny, 10 -15 knots, lowish swell. Supposed to continue for another day. Yay!
